Course Information
Location
Albuferia
Description.
Salgados Golf designed by Pedro Vasconcelos opened in 1994 with Robert More (USA) adding refinements to the original design. Located near the Gale beach between Pera and Albuferia where the coast is uncharacteristically flat. Not unnaturally, much use is made of water on this course, since it is virtually below sea level. Playing Salgados has, however, a treat in store with its links style golf combined with the sensation of having been transported to the sunshine of Florida. The area is also adjacent to a bird sanctuary and is home to many varieties of waterfowl which can be observed from dawn to dusk. Apparently they are not unduly put off by the invasion of their privacy by local and visiting golfers. The low lying wetlands of the landscape which includes some fourteen water hazards makes for accuracy when the driving off the tee a top priority. Sea and land breezes across the low terrain often affecting playing conditions making it a challenging course which demands total concentration
Pro’s Playing Tips
To gain maximum satisfaction from playing this course golfers need to think about each shot carefully. Pay particular attention to where it is anticipated landing each drive and never underestimate the usually stiff, onshore breeze. Every shot will be a test right from the first tee.
The par – 5- 6th has a lake running the entire length of the right hand side. The fairway is generous enough off the tee, but there is a tendency to ‘think left’ and then overdo it. The hole is 515 metres. The green is offset to the right, protected by the water, and the fairway a good deal narrower. The approach is all carry, with a scant 20 metres or so in front of the two tiered green. `Might be wiser to ‘take the dry route’ round to the left` the Pro asks.
The next is a testing par 4 of 415 metres. Normally this means playing right into the wind and it is technically, probably one of the best holes in Portugal.
Of the par - 3’s, the 12th is over water – 130 metres to a tricky two-tiered green. It should not be difficult but it can be intimidating.
The 14th and 15th are two par 5’s. The 15th is 545 metres and this means teeing off over a tidal creek. With a line of ornamental bushes to the right, left looks the best line but there is also a need to avoid the dune hummocks which divide this from the fairway of the previous hole.
